TJ O'BRIEN

"JD DANIELS"
TERROR ON THE COAST
MISSISSIPPI

Before the paint.

Before the circus.

Before the laughter echoed through darkened halls.

Before anyone had ever heard the name JD…

There was a little boy on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

And all he wanted…

was to be loved.

JD wasn’t born Jaded Daniels.

In fact, almost nobody alive knows the name he was given at birth.

That name belongs to someone who no longer exists.

Growing up along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, he watched his brothers receive everything he desperately wanted.

Affection.

Praise.

Protection.

Love.

His parents seemed to have enough for everyone.

Except him.

Behind closed doors, neglect became cruelty.

Cruelty became abuse.

And slowly, a little boy began believing there must be something wrong with him.

There was only one person who made him believe otherwise.

His sister.

Who we only know as Gunk.

She was more than his sister.

She was his best friend.

His protector when she could be.

His reason to smile when there wasn’t much worth smiling about.

And most importantly…

she loved him before anyone else did.

Eventually, he couldn’t survive that house anymore.

So one night, he decided to run.

But before disappearing, he found Gunk.

He promised her something.

“I’m coming back for you.”

Maybe she believed him.

Maybe she didn’t.

But he made sure she heard the rest.

“When I’m strong enough to protect you… I’ll come back.”

Then the boy disappeared into the Mississippi night.

He wandered.

Town after town.

Until one night he saw lights glowing against the darkness.

A traveling circus.

He followed the music.

And what he discovered changed everything.

Families gathered together.

Children laughed.

Parents smiled.

Performers were adored by complete strangers.

But one thing fascinated him more than anything else.

The clowns.

Children ran toward them.

People cheered for them.

Everyone seemed to love them.

And to a child who had spent his entire life wondering why nobody loved him, the answer suddenly seemed obvious.

Maybe there wasn’t something wrong with him.

Maybe he simply needed to become someone else.

Someone people could love.

So he painted his face.

And for the first time in his life…

the world smiled back.

The boy grew up beneath the circus lights.

And he was good.

Very good actually.

His movements were unpredictable.

His performances were chaotic.

And his laugh could fill the entire tent.

Children adored him.

Families returned just to see him.

Soon his face appeared on posters.

His name moved higher on the marquee.

Until eventually…

the forgotten little boy became the headliner.

For the first time, he knew what it felt like to hear people cheering for him.

To have people waiting for him.

To feel wanted.

And somewhere inside himself, he thought:

I finally found my family.

But sadly, he hadn’t.

Jealousy had begun spreading behind the curtain.

The performers who once welcomed him watched as the runaway became everything they wanted to be.

Then the circus traveled through Alabama.

Near Rainsville, children began disappearing.

Fear spread through the surrounding community.

Parents demanded answers.

Authorities searched.

Rumors grew.

And someone needed to be blamed.

The circus performers saw their opportunity.

They gave the town their clown.

They came for him after a show.

He was still wearing his costume.

The paint was still on his face.

Only hours earlier, children had been laughing with him.

Now their parents wanted answers.

The townspeople dragged him somewhere isolated.

An old slaughterhouse outside Rainsville.

A place forgotten by most.

A place where nobody would hear what happened inside.

They chained him beneath the old rails.

Then the questions began.

“Where are the children?”

He told them the truth.

He didn’t know.

They asked again.

He gave the same answer.

Again and again and again.

Every answer brought more pain.

Until JD finally understood.

They weren’t looking for answers.

They had already decided he was guilty.

They weren’t trying to find a monster.

They were trying to punish one.

And when they couldn’t find the monster they wanted…

They unknowingly created one.

Someone grabbed a filthy rag and began scrubbing the clown paint from his face.

“Let’s see what kind of monster is underneath.”

Those words cut deeper than anything else they’d done.

Because the paint wasn’t a disguise.

It was the first face anyone had ever loved.

His parents hadn’t loved the boy.

But the world…

the world had loved the clown.

And now they were taking him away too.

They tore apart his costume.

Destroyed the belongings he’d carried from town to town.

Stripped away everything he’d built since escaping Mississippi.

And eventually…

the screaming stopped.

The pleading stopped.

JD’s head fell forward.

Silence filled the slaughterhouse.

One of the townspeople grabbed his face.

“Where are the children, clown?”

Nothing.

“WHERE ARE THEY?”

Slowly…

JD raised his head.

Half the clown remained.

Half the forgotten child stared back.

Then…

he smiled.

A tiny sound escaped him.

A chuckle.

Then another.

And another.

Until something happened inside that slaughterhouse that nobody there would ever forget.

JD began to laugh.

But it wasn’t his circus laugh.

That laugh had been created to bring people joy.

This one came from somewhere else.

Somewhere broken.

Somewhere empty.

This laugh had been born from pain.

The louder JD laughed…

the quieter everyone else became.

And for the first time that night, JD noticed something different in their eyes.

Not hatred.

Not anger.

Fear.

JD stared at them.

And laughed harder.

All his life, he’d wanted people to love him.

But love disappeared.

Love betrayed him.

Love could be taken away.

Fear was different.

Fear stayed.

The townspeople believed they’d finally broken him.

They had.

They simply didn’t understand what they’d broken him into.

Eventually, they cut him down.

They dragged what remained of the clown away and abandoned him where they believed the night would finish what they’d started.

Nobody would find him.

Nobody would save him.

Exactly the way JD had felt his entire childhood.

As they walked away…

something followed them through the darkness.

His laughter.

Nobody turned around.

By morning, someone returned.

They expected to find a body.

Instead…

JD was gone.

For years afterward, people whispered about what happened inside that slaughterhouse.

Eventually the story became rumor.

Rumor became legend.

And the world moved on.

The slaughterhouse remained.

Today, that place is known as:

PV SLAUGHTERHOUSE.

People walk through its doors without knowing the legend buried beneath it.

They don’t know about the clown.

They don’t know about the betrayal.

They don’t know about The Last Performance.

But JD remembers.

Because PV Slaughterhouse isn’t where JD died.

It’s where Jaded Daniels was born.

Nobody knows what happened during the days after JD disappeared.

But the thing that eventually emerged was no longer the person the circus had known.

He abandoned his birth name.

That name belonged to the child who begged people to love him.

Only one person would ever be allowed to remember that boy.

Gunk.

Everyone else would know what the world had created.

Jaded Daniels.

JD.

And JD had learned something.

People forget what they love.

But they never forget what they fear.

JD doesn’t kill.

Death ends suffering.

JD doesn’t want it to end.

Instead, he gives his victims what the world gave him.

Fear.

Helplessness.

Isolation.

He leaves them alive because physical wounds eventually heal.

But somewhere, years later, when the room gets quiet…

when the lights go out…

when they hear laughter somewhere in the distance…

they’ll remember him.

Fear remembers.

And JD spent too many years being forgotten.

There is but one line JD refuses to cross.

Children are safe from his wrath.

JD doesn’t threaten them.

He doesn’t torment them.

He doesn’t want them afraid of him.

When a frightened child approaches JD, the monster changes.

His posture softens.

His movements become playful.

He’ll wave.

Joke.

Kneel beside them.

Make them laugh.

Whatever it takes.

Because JD knows what happens when frightened children are left alone with monsters.

He became one.

He will always ensure they will never be one!

And somewhere beneath the scars, madness and painted smile is still the child who desperately needed someone to tell him he was safe.

JD cannot save that little boy anymore.

But he can make damn sure he never creates another one.

Years passed.

But JD remembered something from the night he left Mississippi.

A promise.

I’ll come back for you.

So JD returned to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Not seeking revenge.

Not searching for the family who had abused him.

He returned for the only person who had ever loved him.

Gunk.

He searched until he finally discovered what had happened to his sister.

She had been locked away inside a mental institution.

The sister he remembered had spent years imprisoned, tormented and treated as something that needed to be controlled.

JD walked through those doors alone.

He didn’t leave alone.

When he finally reached Gunk, he didn’t see someone broken.

He saw someone who had survived.

He didn’t try to cure her madness.

He unlocked it.

He taught her to embrace it.

Control it.

Own it.

And from everything the world had done to her emerged something magnificent.

The little boy had finally kept his promise.

He came back for his sister.

And JD made sure she understood something:

He would never leave her again.

That’s why when you see Gunk wandering alone…

you should never assume she’s unprotected.

If you don’t see JD…

look harder.

He’s there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Protecting the only person who loved him before the world learned to fear him.

JD had returned to Mississippi for Gunk.

But neither of them had a home anymore.

The place where they’d grown up held nothing for them except memories.

So they wandered.

Until eventually they found somewhere different.

A place along the Gulf Coast where screams weren’t silenced.

They were celebrated.

A place where darkness wasn’t hidden.

Where madness didn’t need to be cured.

Where monsters didn’t have to pretend to be human.

Terror on the Coast.

JD knew that feeling.

He’d felt it once before.

Many years ago when a frightened child wandered toward the lights of a circus and thought he’d finally found somewhere he belonged.

But the circus had betrayed him.

This place didn’t.

For the first time since becoming Jaded.

JD had found a home.

Not the home where the forgotten child was born.

Not the circus where the clown was created.

Not the slaughterhouse where the monster awakened.

A home for exactly what he and Gunk had become.

And this time…

nobody was taking his family away.

Now Gunk—the Mistress of Madness—keeps the horde fed with the unsuspecting souls who enter Terror on the Coast every year.

And JD?

JD watches.

Sometimes you’ll see him.

Sometimes you won’t.

But when the lights flicker…

when footsteps seem to follow you…

when something moves just beyond where the light can reach…

listen.

Because eventually you’ll hear it.

The laugh.

The same laugh born beneath the rails of that slaughterhouse in Alabama.

The laugh of a man who discovered that fear lasts longer than love.

The laugh of the forgotten child who finally made the world remember him.

He was born on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

A forgotten son.

He ran away and joined the circus.

And became a clown.

They betrayed him in Alabama.

And created a monster.

He returned to Mississippi for his sister.

And kept his promise.

Then they found Terror on the Coast.

And the monster finally came home.

JD is more than a clown.

JD is the Forgotten Son.

The Broken Clown.

The Fear in the Shadows.

A hurt little boy who grew into something terrifying and somehow still remembered how to love.

He left Mississippi as a frightened little boy.

He returned as Jaded Daniels.

PV Slaughterhouse wasn’t where he died.

It was where he was born.

And Terror on the Coast isn’t somewhere he haunts.

It’s home.

So if you ever hear JD laughing somewhere inside those halls…

don’t ask what’s so funny.

Just remember:

The last people who heard that laugh for the first time stopped laughing themselves.

And sooner or later…

everyone comes home to JD
